Viscosity of high crystal content melts: dependence on solid fraction
نویسنده
چکیده
The rheological properties of suspensions containing high solid fractions are investigated. Attention is focused on viscosity of sil-icate and magmatic melt systems. A general empirical equation which describes the relative viscosity of suspensions as a function of suspended solid fraction is proposed. In the limit of very dilute solid concentrations it reduces to the Einstein equation. The proposed relationship is satisfactorily applied to reproduce available experimental data relative to silicate melts. Moreover, the extrap-olation of the model to very high concentrations is compared with experimental observations on partially-melted granite.

where η is the relative viscosity, φ the volume fraction of particles, B the Einstein coefficient (with a theoretical value B = 2.5), and α, β, γ are three adjustable parameters. The proposed parameterisation approximately reduces to the classical, well established relationships for small fractions. On the other hand, a weak point of equation (1) is that for large φ, the relative viscosity tend...
متن کاملThe Melt Shear Viscosity of Polypropylene/Glass Bead Composites at High Extrusion Flow Rates
The effects of filler content and its surface treatment with silane coupling agent on the melt shear viscosity of glass bead-filled polypropylene (PP) composites have been investigated using a capillary rheometer at a wide shear rate scope of 150 to 7200 s and temperature range of 160 to 200 C. The melt flow obeys power law, but the slopes of the flow curves have transitions at the shear rate o...
متن کاملOptimization of A Thermal Coupled Flow Problem of Semiconductor Melts
In this paper we describe the formal Lagrange-technique to optimize the production process of solid state crystals from a mixture crystal melt. After the construction of the adjoint equation system of the Boussinesq equation of the crystal melt the forward and backward problems (KKT-system) are discretized by a conservative finite volume method.
متن کاملAn experimental study on the pressure dependence of viscosity in silicate melts.
The effect of pressure on melt viscosity was investigated for five compositions along the join An(CaAl(2)Si(2)O(8))-Di(CaMgSi(2)O(6)) and four alkali silicates containing lithium, sodium, and potassium in constant ratio of approximately 1:1:1, but alkali-silica ratios are varying. The experiments were performed in an internally heated gas pressure vessel at pressures from 50 to 400 MPa in the v...
